Today we lost “Grace” our last guinea, to another night time creature.
Last spring we purchased 6 guineas from a farmer to help keep our yard free of ticks and bugs.
After letting them out of their pen, they roamed – “worked” our yard and our neighbor’s yard as well, which they didn’t mind. People, driving by, would see them in the field and stop and take pictures of them. They are quite interesting birds.
Slowly we lost them to other creatures one after the other. Grace survived the rest of the clan through the fall and into winter. She slept in the pine trees in our yard, and ate bird seed with the other birds. We really enjoyed watching her and them “work” our yard.
Grace would “talk” to me from the tree tops, so I knew she was still hanging around. They are very wary birds, we were never able to hold her and pet her, but we enjoyed having her in our yard.
So we will miss Grace and also our cat – Creamy- who also has been missing since 12-7-09. We think he became “lunch” too, for another night time creature.
The farmer we got them from has raised many of them, and has had them for a number of years. We live in an area of allot of lakes and wild land, even though we are pretty much surrounded by crop land. But we have numerous wild creatures in our area – such as wolves, coyotes, foxes, fishers, owls, eagles, turkey vultures and numerous other animals and predatory birds. It seems the numbers of these types of animals are increasing in our area. I also have been noticing a decrease in our song and winter bird populations. This also might be an indication of more predatory species in the area.
So today ends our stint with the guineas. I would love to have more of them, but don’t want them to become “lunch” for other animals.
