Microfiber care is a little different than taking care of your cotton items.
Microfiber is made up of a blend of polyester and polyamide, the polyester gives it durablilty and softness, and the polyamide gives it absorability.
If you use bleach on microfiber you will destroy the fibers, using fabric softners coats the fibers so they won’t absorb. You can wash your microfiber with regular detergent, but I suggest using HOT water at least sometimes when washing them. We don’t use hot water much for washing clothes anymore, but microfiber loves hot water. It causes the fibers to swell pushing out the dirt.
If you are finding that your microfiber is becoming stiff, nonabsorbent or smelly, it is probably not clean. Soak it in hot water and detergent, one that doesn’t contain fabric softners or an oxygen bleach, “work” the cloth and rinse well. Be careful of using store bought detergents as they may contain fabric softners without having it listed on the label. Try using more natural, pure detergents.
When using microfiber dish cloths, rinse well when you have finished using. This year I have found I have had more of a problem with “smelly” dish cloths than in the past. This year my husband got “retired” from his job, so he has been doing dishs more, and we had switched to a natural dish soap. It is possible the cloth isn’t getting rinsed as well, and since it is a less harsh dish soap, more grease and grime is being left in the cloth, thus causing it to smell. Since some of the natural dish soaps come from soy products, the oils could be “hanging” in the cloth.
Using bleach on the cloth, will not solve the problem, it will just create more, since bleach will destroy the fibers. Wash it in Hot water and a fat free detergent instead. The fat in some soaps will collect inside the fibers of the cloth. We had this problem with homemade soaps that contain animal fat. It along with dirt, actually plugged up the fibers of our wash cloths. It was quite a job to get that worked back out of the cloth.
The “magic” of the fibers can be a problem if it is not cleaned properly, but if cleaned adequately they will last a long time.
One final point – do not dry your microfiber in high heat, it will “fry” the fibers overtime. Microfiber dries quite well on low heat, and will dry in less time on low heat, than a cotton towel on high heat. So save money and save on your microfiber as well.
